I have been taking a break from Club for a few weeks for personal reasons but that is the best thing about Club. I know that, no matter how long I'm away, I will always be welcome back with a laugh and a smile as well as a bit of banter!
Now, don't get me wrong, people have different ideas about what "banter" is. To me, banter is light hearted micky taking but can banter become more than just fun? In my opinion, yes it can. There is a fine line between good natured leg pulling and bullying and it all depends on the view of the person on the end of that leg. It can so easily go too far and innocently too. So, how do I deal with banter that has crossed the line, especially at club.
At club we have policies in place for this sort of situation. But, before anyone asks for the committee to get involved I always try the following:
- Ask the person to stop. Explain that what they are saying is unacceptable and hurtful.
- Be the better person and walk away. Sometimes people use banter as an excuse to start an argument (but NOT ALL THE TIME).
- If it continues, or more people start to get involved, then come and talk to us. We take all complaints seriously and will always try to find a way to work with everyone involved.
Take care y'all and hope to see you all one day at club.
