Most people view D&D (and other RPG's in general) as being for nerds and geeks but they couldn't be more wrong! Yes, it requires the use of dice! Yes, it requires basic maths and language skills. But, most importantly, it requires the use of imagination. This it what makes D&D such a classic. Okay, they have released digital versions, films based on the system and even a cartoon but it has always kept to it's roots.
But it has had it's fair share of ups and downs (remember 4th edition? Still sends shivers down my spine) but it has still drawn hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of people into it's fold. Instead of having someone else's idea of what you should look like, you can see it in your minds eye. Your new imaginary friend develops a character of it's own, you become that character in effect. All using the power of your mind!
Now, don't get me wrong, I enjoy a video game as much as anyone else, but there are times where it becomes mind numbing. Not having to imagine what your avatar looks like, not having to worry about it's personality. Just being concerned about pressing the right button at the right time! Sometimes I think that we need to encourage people of all ages to use their imagination. Perhaps this could help those who have early signs of dementia? Help those who suffer some form of social anxiety? Could it help to relax the mind and encourage children to write stories? Who knows! But I think we, as gamer's and hobbyists, should try to encourage others to join in.
So, grab a starter set and try it with your family and friends!
